In 2022, the UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced a new symposium - the first of its kind, this event brings together a multi-disciplinary group of participants to learn about the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem and explore its application to address contemporary fire safety challenges.
As the world continues to evolve and transform, there are both new and lingering challenges that impact fire and life safety; many examples that point to gaps, cracks and weaknesses in our safety system that otherwise should protect communities. The NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem identifies the components that must work together to minimize these risks and help prevent loss, injuries and death from fire, electrical and other hazards.
In September 2022, the UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) hosted their inaugural symposium to discuss the principles of the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem and its application to address today's fire safety issues. The symposium brought together top researchers, academics, risk managers, code officials, engineers, architects, fire service personnel, public policy makers and urban planners who presented, collaborated and applied learnings of the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem to the modern-day built environment. Future symposia will seek to do the same:
