The Role of UMD's Maryland Graduate Applied Engineering Program 

All applications to the Graduate Certificate in Fire Protection Engineering program must be submitted online to the Maryland Graduate Applied Engineering (MAGE) program, which administers all Professional Masters and Graduate Certificate programs. On-Campus or Online!

The Department of Fire Protection Engineering offers a Graduate Certificate through MAGE. The certificate program can be completed entirely online. Designed with the working engineer in mind, it features a curriculum rich in the latest scientific and technological principles and practices needed for career advancement.  Degree requirements can be found here for both the On-Campus and Online programs.

Minimum Requirements to Apply

Applicants should have a B.S. degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.

Applicants should have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0/4.0.

Prior to applying, applicants should have taken the following three (3) prerequisite courses: differential equations, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Note: Structural mechanics is not required for students interested in pursuing an online Graduate Certificate in Engineering, but is required for the M.S. and M.Eng. programs.

Applicants from non-English speaking countries must satisfy the requirements of UMD's office of International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS), which generally involves submitting scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), financial certification, and visa documentation. Tuition and Fees

Students in the Graduate Certificate programs pay a special tuition rate, which is not fully covered by graduate assistantships, fellowships or tuition remission. Additional graduate student fees are charged. Tuition and fees are subject to change.


  • Tuition rates for on-campus and online classes are not the same.
  • Tuition rates do not differ between residents and non-residents of Maryland.
