Did you know that our top students are fully funded through the Graduate Research Assistantships, and that over 80% of our M.S. students are at least partially supported financially through the Graduate Teaching or Research Assistantships? Contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Prof Arnaud Trouvé (atrouve@umd.edu) for additional information.

The educational objectives of the Master of Science (M.S.) in Fire Protection Engineering  and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Fire Protection Engineering programs are to produce graduates who:
  • Have the technical knowledge and skills needed to practice fire protection engineering locally, nationally and internationally in a variety of modern professional settings;
  • Have the ability to understand and communicate societal, environmental, economic and safety implications of engineering decisions on the local and global communities;
  • Are prepared to attain professional certification and licensure;
  • Appreciate the need to maintain continual professional competency and to practice ethically; and
  • Are prepared to participate in the development and promotion of fire protection engineering and assume technical and/or business leadership positions.

Additional educational objectives specific to the M.S. degree program are to produce graduates who:

  • Appreciate the importance of scientific research as a mechanism to strengthen the technical basis of fire protection engineering; and
  • Have the basic competencies needed to pursue advanced studies (e.g., Ph.D.) in fire protection engineering or related fields.

The UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering offers an environment for advanced graduate study and research in the broad field of fire safety with the following options:

  • If you are a current FPE undergraduate student who has earned at least 90 credits toward your B.S. and have maintained a GPA of 3.50 or higher, you may apply to join our Combined Bachelor/Master of Science or Combined Bachelor/Master of Engineering program, which allow students to earn both degrees in approximately five to five and a half years;
  • You can apply to our M.S. program; or
  • You can apply to the M.Eng. program, which is offered online and on campus.
  • The certificate program is designed with the working engineer in mind, and features a curriculum rich in the latest scientific and technological principles and practices needed for career advancement. It can be completed entirely online.
  • FPE does not confer a Ph.D. degree at this time; however, students may pursue a Ph.D. with an emphasis in fire protection engineering by enrolling in the doctoral programs of other departments in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
