New Name for Graduate Engineering Education at Clark School

The Office of Advanced Engineering Education at the University of Maryland has changed its name to Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering.

This change—effective immediately—reflects the traditional and niche graduate programs offered in engineering education; thus providing opportunities for the lifelong learning of graduate engineering for both working engineers and technical professionals.

Part of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering’s mission is to aide in the Clark School’s goal of being a leader in continuing education opportunities in the region, the nation, and beyond. In operation since 1994, our programs have been proudly serving the engineering community for 25 years, allowing students the flexibility to advance their education while balancing work and family.

“An integral piece of the graduate education we offer our students is the ability to put the cutting-edge engineering knowledge they are gaining in the classroom to work in their existing jobs right away,” says Darryll J. Pines, Dean of Engineering and Nariman Farvardin Professor at the Clark School since January 2009. “Utilizing the term ‘applied’ reflects our promise that all of our graduates will leave ready to impact the grand challenges of the 21st century. The Office of Applied Graduate Engineering looks forward to this new moniker as emblematic of our continued positive growth.”

Degrees granted will retain their previous name of Master of Engineering and Graduate Certificate in Engineering.

Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering is led by Dr. George Syrmos, Assistant Dean for Continuing Education.

“Our more than 3,500 valued alumni are a vast community equipped with the ever-evolving knowledge and skills needed to positively impact both public and private industries,” says Syrmos.

“As we look forward to welcoming the next generation of great engineers, we will use our identity as the Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering program to ensure continued growth alongside new and important technologies and skills required by industry.”
