Students enrolled in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs at the University of Maryland may participate in the Combined Bachelor of Science / Master of Science program in Fire Protection Engineering.

The Combined Bachelor's/Master's of Science degree program require a 3.50 or higher cumulative GPA and 90 or more degree credits. Interested and qualified undergraduates should take 3 graduate courses (9 credits) after reaching 90 degree credits. These 9 credits will be counted as part of their coursework requirement for both of their combined degrees. These Combined Programs allow students to complete both the bachelor's and master's degrees in approximately five to five and a half years.

Joining the Combined Programs in Fire Protection Engineering is a two-step process. In the first step, students should meet with the Fire Protection Engineering advisor the first term of their junior year to discuss program application and procedural forms. All forms should be submitted no later than one week before the first meeting of the student’s first 600 level class.

Once the student reaches their final academic year in the bachelor of science program,  the second step is application to the UMD Graduate School. Deadlines for applying to the FPE graduate program may be found on the University of Maryland Graduate School website.

The Department of Fire Protection Engineering's Combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Science and Bachelor of Science/Master of Engineering programs have the same admission requirements but the degree requirements differ.  Changing from one program to the other may require re-application or specific paperwork. For more information, see our M.S. vs. M.Eng Website.

Acceptance to Fire Protection Engineering Combined Programs does not guarantee admission to the Graduate School.

Course Requirements

Students in the combined program can take a maximum of three courses that will double count for both undergraduate and graduate credit. Courses are offered beginning in junior year, assuming the student is eligible. Course selections should be discussed with the student's academic advisor.

Tuition

Graduate-level courses taken on campus while the student is an undergraduate are paid for by the student's full-time undergraduate tuition and fees, which are set by the UMD Office of the Bursar. Online graduate courses taken while the student is an undergraduate are subject to the tuition and fee costs set by MAGE, as are the balance of credits taken as a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Engineering program.
