We solve universal problems that the whole world deals with. We make it so most people don’t have to think about safety when they enter a building, and I find that rewarding.
Class of 2026
Hometown: Ellicott City, MD
High School: Mount Hebron High School
Community College: Transferred to UMD from Howard Community College
What is your favorite thing about FPE?
My favorite aspect of FPE is that it is a unique field that’s in high demand. We solve universal problems that the whole world deals with. We make it so most people don’t have to think about safety when they enter a building, and I find that rewarding.
Why did you choose FPE over other STEM majors?
The job security and stability of this field is a big reason I picked this over other STEM majors. Other majors seem to have competition for jobs versus in FPE, we are recruited and have chances to speak with industry leaders and companies often.
What do you value most about the Department and your time with FPE?
The community. From study sessions and the SFPE barbecue to hanging out in the lounge, people show up for each other. That support makes the hard classes doable and the wins more fun as we succeed together. Being close with classmates makes difficult classes manageable.
How else are you involved in the campus, either in or outside the Department?
I was involved in the ClarkLead welcome event for new transfer engineering students this past fall semester. I got to meet incoming transfer students and introduce them to UMD. I am also a SFPE student chapter member and like to attend events with my classmates, such as the back-to-school barbecue or employer meet and greets.
When you’re not in class or serving the Department, where can you be found?
Outside of class, you can see me at the gym or at work. I work full-time in network management for a consulting firm in my free time. This leaves little room for other activities. I try to stay active by going to the gym when time permits.
What is the best thing about UMD?
The support systems that are in place to help you succeed! If you didn’t know, there are many campus resources for tutoring or homework help in many of the capstone classes. This can make hard classes much more manageable if you struggle!
Any last words for prospective students?
Fire Protection Engineering is welcoming, hands-on, and impactful. You’ll join a tight-knit program, learn from faculty who know your name, connect with employers early, and work on problems that genuinely protect lives. If you’re curious, collaborative, and want your engineering to matter every day, FPE is a great fit.
