The 1st University of Maryland/NFPA
Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem Symposium

As the world continues to evolve and transform, there are both new and lingering challenges that impact fire and life safety; many examples that point to gaps, cracks and weaknesses in our safety system that otherwise should protect communities. The NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem identifies the components that must work together to minimize these risks and help prevent loss, injuries and death from fire, electrical and other hazards.

In September, the UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host their inaugural symposium to discuss the principles of the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem and its application to address today's fire safety issues. The symposium brings together top researchers, academics, risk managers, code officials, engineers, architects, fire service personnel, public policy makers, and urban planners who will present, collaborate and apply learnings of the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem to the modern-day built environment.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Bring together leaders from across the fire and life safety spectrum to learn about a full safety systems approach and encourage action-oriented collaboration between industry professionals using the principles of the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem
  • Build consensus for the development of a multi-disciplinary group at the University of Maryland and universities in the Baltimore-Washington area to collaborate on research and educational programming for university students and working professionals associated with the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem
  • Initiate discussion of subsequent symposia that focus on the partner activities related to the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem
