Class of 2024Angelo Capati FPE Ambassador
Hometown: Waldorf, MD
High School: North Point High School

What is your favorite thing about FPE?

My favorite thing about FPE is the fact that it is always evolving. FPEs band together to make the rules that other FPEs follow, and it's being perfected by experience to save lives. No matter what, you will always have a set of guidelines and codes to follow in case you get lost.

Why did you choose FPE over other STEM majors?

FPE was a match for me ever since I laid eyes on it. This is a unique engineering community with unlimited opportunities, from evaluating human behavior, to properties of fire, and to designing fire suppression systems. FPE constantly challenges me as an engineer, which I love and I have really grown to learn that everyone in FPE knows each and one another.

What do you value most about the Department and your time with FPE?

What I value the most from the FPE department are the stories that each professor has. While some seem absolutely outlandish and almost impossible, they always connect first hand to what we are learning about and give me actual examples of how we can put design and code consulting skills to work in the real field.

How else are you involved in the campus, either in or outside the Department?

I am a mentor and tutor for the Center for Minorities in Science in Engineering, I am an officer for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and I am a part of the department diversity equity and inclusion committee.

When you’re not in class, or serving the Department, where can you be found?

When I am not in class you can catch me listening to Laufey at Glen Martin in the SHPE lounge on the couch, at AJC in the innovation lab, or getting chicken tenders at the South Campus Dining Hall.

What is the best thing about UMD?

The best thing about UMD is its rites of passage. Where else would you find yourself rubbing the nose of a terrapin statue and donating to it in the same semester. From swimming in the fountain to just enjoying sun on the McKeldin mall, nothing really makes you more of a terrapin than joining in on the festivities.

Any last words for prospective students?

If we ever get the chance to meet, I will tell you about how engineering is anything but a linear journey. The challenges you face as an engineering student have all been encountered before, you are not alone in your questions and concerns. Just take a deep breath and before you know it you’ll be ready to graduate.
