The department has the capability to obtain a comprehensive characterization and analysis of water sprays that are unmatched at any other laboratory, whether in academia or private industry. The Spatially–resolved Spray Scanning System (4S) apparatus provides a complete 3-D near-field measurement of the spray from any nozzle or sprinkler. The spray diagnostics apparatus and analytical approaches were developed by Andre Marshall over many years of research with support from NSF. Combined with measurements at the floor and computer simulations, predictions of the actual delivered density from any nozzle are possible. This capability can provide input to the standards community was well as to inform efficient designs of water-based fire suppression systems (and other spraying systems).
