Fire phenomena includes a complex coupling between chemistry, fluid dynamics and combustion which together produces both beautiful and devastating fire behavior. FPE researchers use a variety of techniques to understand and model this phenomena. Experimentally, scaling analyses are used to understand the properties of both laminar and turbulent diffusion flames at smaller scales to understand larger-scale fire behavior. Numerical simulations are used to complement these studies and understand their scalability. Experimental insight is also used to provide detailed sub-models of fire behavior, such as extinction within flames, that improve numerical predictions.
