Class of 2026

What is your favorite thing about FPE?

My favorite thing about FPE is that the classes connect to real-life applications. Whether it be looking at new products, analyzing human behavior, or using past fire events to explain current industry practices, I am constantly being taught practical information that will help me in my future career.

Why did you choose FPE over other STEM majors?

I knew I wanted to be an engineer, but I specifically chose FPE because of how versatile and impactful it is. The main goal of FPE is to increase safety, and I like knowing that I am in a field with so many possible career paths full of flexibility, growth, and meaning.

What do you value most about the Department and your time with FPE?

I find it really unique to be part of a department where everyone is always interested in learning. It is cool to have experienced and knowledgeable professors who are continuously seeking opportunities to incorporate real-world applications into classroom material and research endeavors.

How else are you involved in the campus, either in or outside the Department?

I am a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers chapter at UMD. I enjoy learning from the professional events and getting to know people in the department.

When you’re not in class, or serving the Department, where can you be found?

When I’m not in class, I can be found cooking/baking, playing with dogs, or listening to music.

What is the best thing about UMD?

Maryland Dairy!

Any last words for prospective students?

Engineering can be very hard, but having a supportive community is super important to your success. FPE is part of my supportive community that helps me make it through. No matter what major you choose, make sure to surround yourself with people who will support you in achieving your goals.
