Class of 2025

Hometown: Chesapeake Beach, MD
High School: Northern High School

What is your favorite thing about FPE?

My favorite thing about Fire Protection Engineering is the core belief about the safety of people and our environment, which is reflected in our work and research.

Why did you choose FPE over other STEM majors?

The program's uniqueness, tight-knit community plus the fact that there is a strong connection to alumni from the dept. Every class about fire protection that I have taken since transferring has made me increasingly invested and wanting to learn more. The jobs that are reached with an FPE degree still reflect the core belief of helping and protecting people's lives, which I feel is rare with other engineering or STEM majors.

How else are you involved in the campus, either in or outside the Department?

Outside of the department, I have completed the DCC honors program, and I am a part of Alpha Omega Epsilon, Women in Engineering, and SFPE. I also enjoy rock climbing at Epply and trying intramural sports during the semester!

When you’re not in class, or serving the Department, where can you be found?

I enjoy studying outside when the weather is nice, the tables outside the Idea Factory or Hornbake plaza are great choices. I am sometimes in Glenn L Martin helping the WIE department with tasks, and can also be found in the SFPE lounge doing homework with other FPEs.

What is the best thing about UMD?

UMD has so many smaller communities to be a part of in such a large school, so that you never feel overwhelmed. If you want to try something new it is so easy to, and so many places to explore on and around campus!

Any last words for prospective students?

Don't be scared to try new things, college is the time to find new communities and interests, and maybe even find a new major!
