What is your favorite thing about FPE?
One of the best parts about being an FPE is that I get the opportunity to do something that very few people around the world do! I know that I will get to live a unique life and enter a tight-knit community.
Why did you choose FPE over other STEM majors?
Coming into UMD I was unsure which type of engineering I wanted to study, but after speaking with some professionals in the field and taking ENFP101, the introductory course, I decided to pursue FPE. FPE stands out to me because it is a field where the work you do can potentially save lives!
What do you value most about the Department and your time with FPE?
The Fire Protection Engineering Department here is has a really close community and this community extends beyond current students. My classmates, professors, and I have developed strong relationships that will last a very long time.
How else are you involved in the campus, either in or outside the Department?
Through the department I am the teaching fellow for ENFP101. I help introductory level students begin their journey in FPE and we get to work on a really cool burn project together! I help students design and create detection, notification, and suppression systems in a mock living area. Outside of the department I am a member of the Catholic Student Center and participate in a weekly bible study.
When you’re not in class, or serving the Department, where can you be found?
When I have free time you will often see me golfing, eating lots of food, or playing with my dog!
What is the best thing about UMD?
The best part about UMD is that you can choose what type of experience you want to get out of it. There are hundreds of clubs/organizations to join, but if you want a small school feeling you can easily obtain that here through finding the right activity for you.
Any last words for prospective students?
You should definitely take a look at FPE and reach out to me or somebody else within the department if you are interested! But remember, it is important that you do what makes you happy and you enjoy your time at college!
