What is your favorite thing about FPE?
My favorite thing about FPE is being able to directly help people with the work that I'll be doing. Since fire happens everywhere, I can do so many different jobs with the degree and so many different people to help. The field is also so interdisciplinary that I'll be able to learn from and work with all types of engineers during my career.
Why did you choose FPE over other STEM majors?
I always knew growing up that I wanted to pursue engineering. When I learned about FPE I knew that it was the major for me. The tight-knit atmosphere and the amazing job placement after graduation are what sold me.
What do you value most about the Department and your time with FPE?
I value the support that people in the department offer. Students and faculty reach out to make sure you're doing well and always offer help when you're struggling.
How else are you involved in the campus, either in or outside the Department?
On campus, I am part of a living and learning community that fosters diversity and inclusion in engineering, FLEXUS. I am also part of a professional and social sorority for women in Engineering and technical science-related fields, Alpha Omega Epsilon. I am also a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
Where can you be found when you’re not in class or serving the Department?
When I'm not in class or serving the department you can find me studying in the STEM library, out with my friends, or at Starbucks grabbing a coffee.
What is the best thing about UMD?
My favorite thing about UMD is how diverse it is. There are so many different organizations you can join and many different people you can get to know. Getting involved makes the big campus feel small!
Any last words for prospective students?
FPE is an extremely welcoming and close-knit community you won’t find anywhere else.
