There are several resources for employment on campus as well as external fire protection jobs:

Postdoctoral Positions:

Post-doctoral Fellowship:

The Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland - College Park (UMD) is looking for a motivated post-doctoral fellow to lead a project on rapid suppression of wildland fire. UMD is building a multidisciplinary team to enter the XPRIZE Wildfire Competition and expects the post-doctoral fellow to serve as one of the managers on this team. This is an 18-month appointment with a possible extension. We are looking for a candidate with a recent Ph.D. in fire, mechanical or aerospace engineering.

Experience with fire suppression and/or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is desirable but not required. Interested candidates should send their CV and a list of references to Prof. Stanislav I. Stoliarov (stolia@umd.edu). For best consideration, please submit your application on or before March 1, 2024.

Staff Positions:

No open positions at this time.

Faculty Positions:

Assistant/Associate Professor

Applications are invited for a tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant discipline or be within one year of PhD dissertation defense at the time of application. Experience in teaching and a background in fire protection engineering are desirable but not required. We are looking for a candidate who is excited to lead and work with undergraduate and graduate
students. The position requires teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and establishing a successful, externally funded research program. Candidates with experience and interest in emerging fire safety research topics including wildland urban interface, electric energy storage, hydrogen storage, and mass timber buildings and modern engineering tools including computational fluid dynamics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous aerial systems and advanced multimodal diagnostics are encouraged to apply.

The department offers the only ABET accredited B.S. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering in the United States. The graduate program offers a research M.S. degree and a professional Master of Engineering degree. The FPE department has an active Ph.D. program that is administered through collaborations with other departments in the Clark School of Engineering. The department is a small-size academic unit that prides itself on having highly collaborative interactions between faculty, staff, and students. It also features state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities. FPE is one of eight departments in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. The school of engineering has approximately 220 full-time tenure-track faculty members and is ranked in the Top 25 in the country according to the U.S. News and World Report. College Park is located in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. The proximity of the campus to the nation’s capital allows the development of synergistic opportunities and strong research ties with federal government research laboratories, corporations, and start-ups. The University is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding and diverse faculty and staff who will enhance our stature of preeminence in the three missions of teaching, scholarship, and full engagement in our community, the state of Maryland, and the World.

Clinical Associate Professor

The clinical faculty member will participate in the development of the new online delivery method of the undergraduate FPE/B.S. program, including the design of: a new virtual instructional framework; a suitable framework for student mentoring, possibly through partnerships with selected FPE firms; and a plan to promote student engagement. The clinical faculty member will serve as a critical part of the recruitment strategy and team to reach, engage, and attract prospective students. Once the new method is launched, the clinical faculty member will assume the position of Director of the online FPE undergraduate program and will take oversight responsibilities for its operation. The clinical faculty member will also teach a minimum of three (3) courses per academic year and will facilitate involvement with professional societies, standards organizations and representatives of industry.

The clinical faculty member will interact with staff and professors in the FPE Department and beyond, and the position should be understood as being primarily in-person and should conform to the telework policy of the University of Maryland. The exact proportion of in-person vs. remote work is open to negotiation.

The preferred candidate will be familiar or strongly interested in established/emerging technologies and best practices for online education.

The preferred candidate will be familiar with topics such as the design of fire protection systems, including detection and alarm, automatic suppression systems, egress and smoke control systems; fire resistant construction; life safety considerations; engineering design guides and standards related to fire protection systems and buildings; contemporary developments in fire protection system hardware; and analysis and computational methods that support the development of fire protection designs.
