The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Fellowship provides support for one Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) every year. The support is provided to incoming Master of Science (M.S.) students in the UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) and is awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates with a combination of fire protection engineering and fire service experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

The support goes to an individual who has already applied or will be applying to the FPE M.S. program. Identification of a research project is welcome but is not required; the research project will be defined in collaboration with UL and will mostly be conducted at the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) located in Columbia, MD.

The recipient of the UL Fellowship is expected to complete the proposed research project under the supervision of both a member of the Faculty of the FPE Department and a supervisor at FSRI.

The UL Fellowship includes standard tuition credits (up to 25), health benefits, and a stipend (approximately $31k). The duration of the support is up to 16 months.

Interested applicants should provide a one-page statement of purpose explaining their interest in the MS degree program in general and in firefighting research in particular. Applicants should also provide an updated resume. Applications should be submitted via email to James Milke, Professor and Chair of the FPE Department (milke@umd.edu). The deadline for application is usually around March 1 and will be announced on the FPE website. A decision on the recipient of the UL Fellowship is made by the end of March. The competition applies to incoming students who start their MS program in the following Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring terms.

Contact the Chair of the Department, Dr. James Milke (milke@umd.edu), for additional information.
